DNS MX Record Modification

Overview

MX records control where email is delivered for your domain. This article explains how to change your MX records.



Access the Zone Editor

You can change the MX records by logging into your account, going to the Domains section and accessing the DNS Zone Editor.

  1. Login to your HostMonster account.
  2. Click the Domains tab at the top of the account.
  3. Click on the zone editor link underneath the domains tab.

Making a new MX Record

Once inside the Zone Editor you can make a new MX record using the Add DNS Record form.

  1. Select the domain you're modifying from the drop-down box.
  2. Scroll down to the heading named "Add DNS Record"
    • In the "Host Record"field, enter the domain you're modifying. In most cases, you'll simply need to enter the @ symbol.
    • Leave the "TTL"field at it's default setting.
    • Select "MX" from the drop-down box labelled "Type".
    • In the "Points To" field, enter the necessary address.
    • The "Priority" field dictates the order in which the MX entries are applied. Please refer to your MX entry provider for proper settings here.
  3. Click "Add Record" to finish the process.

Changing an Existing MX Record

The Zone Editor allows you to modify existing MX records.

  1. Select the domain you're modifying from the drop-down box.
  2. Scroll down to the heading named "MX (Mail Exchanger)"
  3. Find the MX Record you wish to change and click the edit button next to it.
  4. Enter the information you want to change on the record.
  5. Click the save button.

Troubleshooting

Changed your MX record and can not receive any email at the mail server?

If you are pointing your MX records to a host other than HostMonster.com you will need to change "Email Routing" from "Local" to "Remote"

Cannot send mail from your email account to other accounts on the server?

If you ever send mail from any domain that is on the same host server as the domain you are sending mail to, your external mail server will not receive the mail.

The reason for this is that a server will always try to send locally before it tries what the actual DNS or MX zone points to. In order to correct this you will need to adjust the MX routing settings to local.

  1. In the zone editor choose your domain from the drop down box.
  2. Scroll down to the MX (Mail Exchanger) section heading.
  3. Click the more link to expand the section.

  4. Choose between Automatically Detect Configuration or Local Mail Exchanger.

  5. Click Change
